The trend was pioneered by hair stylist Karine Jackson, who is based in the UK. Chatting to Refinery 29, she explained the inspiration behind this achingly cool look. "We did something very striking here, but we tone it down in the salon — we use one or two shades lighter [than your base shade], which gives a subtle little feature to straight hair” said Jackson. There’s one basic rule though if you’re planning on giving the trend a go. Jackson says that this trend doesn’t work the other way around so avoid starting with dark roots and going light. This, she says, runs the risk of “ a home dye gone wrong”.
