There are many things to be thankful for in the 21st century, and the Her.ie offices decided we’d show our gratitude to the wonderful world wide web in a new series, ‘Reasons To Be Thankful For The Internet.’

On this day in 1992, ‘A Concert for Life’ took place in London’s Wembley Stadium. The event was a tribute to the incredible life of the late Queen frontman, Freddie Mercury, with all proceeds of the open-air concert going towards AIDS awareness and research.

With an attendance of 72,000, the Easter Monday event was broadcast live on television and radio to 76 countries around the world, reaching an estimated audience of up to one billion.

Mercury died on the 24th November 1991 of bronchopneumonia brought on by AIDS just one day after publicly acknowledging that he had the disease. He was remembered on the night by friends such as Elton John, David Bowie and Paul Young.

The show also marked bassist John Deacon’s penultimate appearance with the band.

Concert profits went on to launch The Mercury Phoenix Trust AIDS charity organisation.
