Smear tests are vitally important for women across the country and though it might not be the most comfortable few minutes of your life, it’s well worth your while. If you are aged between 25 and 60 you are entitled to a free smear test and should avail of this on a regular basis. ________________________________________________ Why should I get a smear? A smear is vital as it is an extremely important procedure that detects changes in the cells of the cervix. Changes can be quite common and smear tests pick up these changes so they can be treated. The earlier changes are detected the better. What is it? First off, it’s not anywhere near as bad as you’ve imagined in your head. Yes, it’s uncomfortable, yes, it’s not the nicest way to spend a few minutes of your day but it is extremely important so therefore worthwhile. Most women do not feel any pain during a smear test, though some people do find it uncomfortable and/or embarrassing. Don’t worry, your doctor has done hundreds, if not thousands of these tests, so if you are feeling nervous just let them know and they will help you relax. The test usually takes five minutes to carry out. An instrument called a speculum is inserted into the vagina to hold the walls of it open. A soft small brush will be used to take a sample of cells from the cervix and then you are done. What about results? The sample of cervical cells will be sent away and examined to see if there are any abnormalities. If abnormalities are detected, your doctor will advise you on the next step in the process. You may have to get them removed or you may have to return in a few months to re-test to see if they have returned to normal themselves. Where do I get tested?
