Don't get me wrong, when you spend your whole teenage years with a face full of acne it's very hard to see the benefits, between feeling self-conscious and being in pain it definitely didn't seem like a good thing.
Even now when you get stressed and feel a spot coming on, you don't exactly celebrate.
But new research in the
Journal of Investigative Dermatology, has shown that it's proven to be a good thing in the long run, we promise.
They discovered that the cells of acne-sufferers have built-in protection which can prolong the effect of thinning skin.
That means that you're much less likely to have wrinkles and the cells provide anti-aging qualities.
The study looked at 1,205 female twins, a quarter of whom had acne. It found that the white blood cells among those with spots had longer protective caps on the ends of chromosomes. Yay!
The caps are said to prevent the chromosomes from deteriorating over time. This means that those with acne, and longer caps,will have younger looking skin for longer.
So next time you feel envious of your clear-skinned friend, remember that when you're both 80, you'll only look about 75!
