There might be no place like home but have you noticed that almost everyone says the same things about where they’re from? Here are a few common phrases that pop into conversation when discussing the place you were born and raised…

“You should definitely go sometime”

Should we? Should we really?

“Sure it’s not too far up/down the road”

It could take 10 hours in a car and you’d still say that the commute could be worse.

“So there’s this place that EVERYONE goes to…”

Like anyone is going to understand where you’re talking about.

We have the best chipper in the country

We’ll believe it when we taste it. (It definitely won’t compare to our local chipper.)

“I actually just live on the outskirts”

Join the club.

“Everyone knows everyone”

The only thing that changes with this phrase is the tone and whether you roll your eyes or not.

“It’s alright”

We Irish never big anything up… except maybe our mams.

“Well at least it’s not Longford”

Still doesn’t stop us from being incredibly defensive. (Also, for the record, we have nothing against Longford.)

“There’s no place like home”

You said it Dorothy!
