The actress Ellen Page took to the stage at the Human Rights Campaign’s Time to THRIVE conference in Las Vegas yesterday and addressed the audience with what will surely go down as one of the most inspirational speeches on not just LGBT rights, but human rights in general.
Page, who visibly looked nervous, addressed various stereotypes that exist in the media and her profession but ones that have also seeped through into ordinary every day life.
Perhaps one of the most defining and truthful lines in the speech was when Ellen stated: "You're here because you have adopted as a core motivation the simple fact that this world would be a whole lot better if we just made an effort to be less horrible to one another."
The actress received a standing ovation when she issued the words: "I am here today because I am gay."
This is all nothing less than brilliant.
