Germany has been shocked by a recent spate of assault reports coming from women in the city of Cologne.
Around 80 sexual assaults and muggings were reported on New Year's Eve, most of them taking place at the city's central train station.
Similar incidents were reported in Hamburg.
According to the
BBC, at least one woman was raped and many were groped and mugged near the city's iconic cathedral.
The Mayor of Cologne, Henrietta Riker described the assaults as 'monstrous'.
The Independent report that Riker wants to introduce a code of conduct for women which includes: ' maintaining an arm’s length distance from strangers, to stick within your own group, to ask bystanders for help or to intervene as a witness, or to inform the police if you are the victim of such an assault.
She also promised an increased police presence in February around the time of the Carnival celebrations.
Many people expressed their frustration at Riker for putting the onus on women to watch out for themselves, rather than tackling the perpatrators of the assaults directly.
