Galway has been selected as the European County of Culture for 2020,
beating Waterford, Kilkenny, Wexford and Limerick to the honour. Cork was the last Irish city to be a Capital of Culture in 2005.

Galway’s winning bid was ‘Making Waves: Landscape, Language and Migration’, and it had a proposed budget of €45.75 million. The city
will get €1.5m from the European Union and will be held in tandem with Rijeka in Croatia.
