Today's date May 23rd, 2015, will go down in history books as the day that Irish people made their voice well and truly heard.
Ireland has officially voted in favour of same-sex marriage this weekend, as provisional results of the count announced at Dublin Castle showed a victory for the 'Yes' side with 1,201,607 votes in favour in comparison to 734,300 'No' votes.
Emotions were running high at Dublin Castle as the official announcement was made this afternoon and, after months of campaigning, Ireland has emphatically made its mark in history.
There were some very special moments throughout the day, including a live proposal on RTÉ and the Limerick count
.
The referendum marked the biggest turn out of voters in the history of the state.
The count started nationwide at 9am this morning and it was reported
showed a ‘Yes’ victory.
Speaking earlier on to RTÉ, Leo Varadkar stated that today is a wonderful day for Ireland.
“It makes it a really historic day for Ireland. We are the first country in the world to enshrine marriage equality in the Constitution by a popular mandate.
"That makes us a beacon, a light for the rest of the world for liberty and equality," he continued. “It’s a very proud day to be Irish."
