We love a good fundraising story and hats (or should that be habits?) off to whoever thought of the following.
The Irish Times reports that almost 1,500 people dressed up as nuns gathered in a football field in Listowel last Saturday to raise funds for Pieta House, a suicide prevention charity. Oh, and we should probably mention that they were also trying to set a new Guinness World record at the same time.
“Nunday” in Listowel saw men and women don the traditional black and white habits in an attempt to raise some money for a very worthy cause. Scattered amongst the fake nuns there were also real nuns who had turned up to show their support.
“We wanted a bit of craic. We’ve had enough of the serious stuff. But we did not want to cause offence either. A lot of us had aunts who were nuns. One of the real nuns told me she hadn’t worn a habit in years,” said columnist Bill Keane, who was participating in the event as a mother superior.
According to reports, a larger-than-expected amount of nuns showed up at Emmets Park in Listowel to show their support for Pieta House.
After all the work that went into getting so many nuns in one place, we’re hoping their try for a new Guinness World record is successful.
