Hilary Duff has some bad news for fans about the Lizzie McGuire reboot

Keeley Ryan

In case you haven’t heard, a Lizzie McGuire reboot is on the way.

Hilary Duff took to the stage at the D23 Expo last week, where she announced that the iconic 2000s Disney series would be headed back to telly screens.

Since then, fans have gotten brief snippets of information about what they can expect.

And now, the 31-year-old actress has some bad news for fans of the series: Lizzie is going to be engaged when the series returns – to someone else, and not her childhood sweetheart/best friend, Gordo.

In an interview with VultureDuff said she wasn’t “devastated” by the news that Lizzie and Gordo weren’t going to be together – and that their platonic friendship was a massive good point for the show.

She said:

“You know what, I don’t know if I was as devastated by that. I feel like them [Lizzie and Gordo] not being together is what was so good.

“It’s that one person that you’re like, ‘Was he the one? Is it ever going to be?’ You’re always kind of wondering. We wanted it to hurt everyone a little bit, and it’ll continue to hurt.”

The Younger actress previously told Entertainment Weekly that she has been working with Terri Minsky, the original creator of the show who will be returning as showrunner for the upcoming series.

She also told of her excitement over having the chance to explore Lizzie’s life as a grownup – and how her own personal experiences are helping her identify with the character more.

She continued:

“Lizzie’s 30 now and I really like the idea of her waking up on her 30th birthday and being like, This isn’t where I thought I was going to be.

“My life has taken a few different forms and my moment wasn’t on my 30th birthday, but it was definitely mid-20s, with a kid, already being like, Oh, this isn’t going to look how I thought it was going to look.

“I really want to tap into that. She’s everyone’s best friend and what everyone loves about her is how relatable she is, so I really wanna go on that 30-year-old journey with everybody.”
