Hygge vibes: 5 gorgeous candles worth splurging on this Christmas

Designer and local.

Denise Curtin

Oh the weather outside is frightful but, the fire is so delightful.

There’s simply no place to go… let’s stay in and drink wine and feel hygge.

December 1st is just around the corner and you know what that means… we can finally watch The Holiday without feeling like we should be saving it for Christmas. A glass of red is in hand the minute we enter the front door. Fluffy pyjamas is the new uniform. And, fairy lights, blankets and candles should be visible from every nook and crevice around the house.

Hygge – a Danish and Norwegian word for a mood of cosiness and comfortable conviviality with feelings of wellness and contentment is the perfect way to describe the way we want our house to feel once December approaches.

And since we spend a lot of the winter indoors, there’s no better time than the present to splash out on some items to give our homes that sense of warmth and luxury.

One of those being a good candle that’ll see us through the winter.

Yes, a little bit more expensive than the norm but, between the scent, longevity and packaging, here are 5 that we’ve tried and tested and totally believe are worth the splurge.

1. Jo Malone

The candles from Jo Malone are well-known for a reason. They give off cracking light, the look beautiful and they smell like the perfume, absolutely irresistible.

From scents like Orange Bitters to the trademark Pomegranate Noir, these candles are pricey at €52 a pop or €28 for the travel size but, you’ll understand the hype once you have one.

Brown Thomas – €52

2. Diptique

Made with a blend of vegetable and paraffin waxes to make sure the candle burns slow and evenly, Diptique is a French brand we totally love.

From their trademark Bais candle to the rose scented one that’s amazing in the bathroom, these candles are again incredible and vary in price with a standard candle coming in at €31.69 from Space NK.

3. Tinnock Farm

On the more sustainable and support local route, the candles from Tinnock Farm in Tipperary are the latest ones I have burning in my sitting room.

All the candles are made with 100 percent natural, renewable soy wax and the packaging and labels are made from recycled paper too.

Plus, they smell amazing and cost €20 – score.

4. Neom

If you’re ever looking for an aroma to make you feel at ease and relaxed after a tough day at the office, Neom should be your go-to.

Their range of candles to destress and unwind receive five star reviews time after time again. Plus, the candles all have a note on mindful breathing, helping you to properly wind down in the comfort of your own home.

Neom – €38

5. Emma’s

And lastly, another range of sustainably made candles which feature soy wax and do not contain any parabens, paraffins, artificial dyes or synthetic fragrances are the candles by Emma.

Irish owned and again, supporting local, Emma’s candles leave off a beautiful scent, feature stunning designs, yeah, we love them!

Plus, at €19.50, the price point is fantastic.

Happy shopping.
