“We’re fortunate we get to do this together:” Irish print designers JANDO celebrate five years

Cassie Stokes

“Without sounding really soppy about it…”

We love an Irish brand and we love prints – so it’s no surprise then that Irish print designer JANDO is one of our favourites.

Colourful, cool and super chic, JANDO’s prints are sure to bring a bit of brightness to your day no matter the weather.

Husband and wife duo Julie and Owen McLoughlin are behind the brand, which made a name for themselves thanks to their quirky prints of places around Ireland.

They told Her all about the positive messages they’ve been sending around the world, and what city they have planned next for their prints.

“We’re all about colour and architecture so we specialise in architecture of both Dublin, all around Ireland and then landmarks,” Julie says.

Even if you don’t know who they are, you probably will recognise some of JANDO pieces.

The most popular of them being their gorgeous print of the Poolbeg chimneys. “Hook head is really popular as well with people,” she says. “We try and cater for everybody.”

During lockdown, JANDO found that Irish customers were very supportive, wanting to help in any way they could. “We had people who just really wanted to support Irish businesses. They were really loyal customers and they were basically just ordering from us.”

“They were sending gifts because they were missing birthdays, they were missing new babies arriving, anniversaries and so on. So they would put a little note on their order and ask us to for the handwritten note with all their stories.”

The messages ranged from sad ones to, well, not so sad ones. “One minute you’d get a story where we’d burst out laughing,” says Julie. “Somebody would miss a really funny birthday.”

It’s been an exciting five years since JANDO first opened, and they aren’t showing signs of slowing down anytime soon. In fact, they’re actually about to launch a New York series of prints.

“We’re going to cover all the main obvious ones, and a couple of not so obvious ones as well,” says Julie. “But they’ll all have the usual JANDO aesthetics, lots and lots of colour!”

Despite the madness of the past few years, Julie still enjoys working side by side with her husband every single day.

“We’re very fortunate that we get to do it together, without sounding really soppy about it,” she says. “We each have our own roles and tasks in the business. The last five years have been crazy, but really good!”

JANDO are having a sale at the moment until September 20th, offering 20% off their prints. Head to their website to see more.
