Beauty fan favourite Huda Beauty is set to pay $2 million to settle a lawsuit after it was discovered that some of the brand’s eyeshadow palettes were “not intended for the eye area.”
The company was accused of including substances banned by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in their popular Neon Obsessions eyeshadow palettes.
A number of pigments in the product were found to have eye irritating and staining properties, with the brand being required to print a warning label on it stating that the product was not suitable for the eye area.
According to the lawsuit filed by customers, the label that gave the warning and list of ingredients was covered and Neon Obsessions was advertised the same way the brand has advertised other palettes.
The images just to promote the eyeshadows also include photos of brand founder Huda Kattan wearing the make up.
The settlement will see the company now paying out $1.93 million on top of the $1.2 million in legal fees for those who filed the lawsuit.
Customers who have bought the palette are now also entitled to return the product for a full refund of the original retail price.
The Neon Obsessions palettes are no longer being manufactured and have been removed from shelves across the US and listed as “out of stock” in the UK.
Back in 2020, Huda was named by Forbes as one of America’s Richest Self-Made Women after starting up the business in 2013 with a fake eyelash range and expanding from there.
Huda was estimated to make $250 million through Huda Beauty in annual sales.
She now boasts over 50 million Instagram followers and 4.13 million YouTube subscribers, with a net worth of $510 million.
