WhatsApp users need to be wary of this popular scam

Cassie Delaney

There’s a new smartphone scam doing the rounds that has already scammed multiple users.

The scam begins with users receiving an invitation to install a “limited edition” version of the popular messaging app called WhatsApp Gold.

Don’t be fooled, while the “upgrade” claims to unlock a tonne of extra features like video calls, the link is actually directing unsuspecting users to a website riddled with malicious software that will have a grave effect on the users phone.

According to The Mirror, the message begins with:

“Hey Finally Secret Whatsapp golden version has been leaked, this version is used only by big celebrities. Now we can use it too.”

The scam seems to have targeted mostly Andriod users.

If you receive the message, delete it straight away and install antivirus software on your phone. Download this directly from the Google Play app store and avoid external app sources.

You’ve been warned people. If that particular message happens to land in your inbox, delete it and be smug in the knowledge that you’ve outsmarted evil once again.
