This casting for the new Doctor Doolittle flick is right up our street

Niamh Maher

Robert Downey Jr will play the beloved Doctor with a knack for animal chats.

A bold casting choice you might say, Downey Jr will be trading in Avengers for animals in his new role. Universal studios confirmed overnight that the 51-year-old will be playing the beloved children’s book character in a new film called The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle.

Stephen Gaghan will helm the project adapted from his original screenplay.

British author Hugh Lofting created the Doctor Dolittle character in the 1920’s  it focused on a Victorian—era physician who opts to treat animals instead of humans because he’s able to communicate with them.

Rex Harrison starred in the 1967 musical adaptation which won two Oscars for best song and best visual effects.

The latest incarnation was Eddie Murphy’s turn as the eccentric Doctor in the 1998 movie ‘Doctor Doolittle‘ and it’s 2001 sequel.

We can’t wait for this one.
