They played the best of friends in Desperate Housewives but there were always rumours that, off-screen, Teri Hatcher and co didn’t exactly get on.

Well the actress who played Susan Mayer has now decided to speak out about her relationship with her former co-stars; Felicity Huffman (Lynette), Marcia Cross (Bree), Eva Longoria (Gabrielle) and Vanessa Williams (Renee).

Teri with the rest of the Desperate Housewives.

She told the Daily Mail: “What I would and have always said is that the show, while it took many happenings to miraculously make it the success it was – the writing, the time of airing, the director, all that stuff – it was really the four of us in the beginning that just had some sort of magical chemistry.

“There’s just nobody else who could have brought those characters to life, and I honour every single one of them for what they brought to that journey and have never ever wished any of them anything but greatness and I’ll continue to do that, so that’s pretty much all I have to say about that.”

But while, as you probably noticed, she didn’t exactly deny that there was a rift or that she is in fact friends with the rest of the Housewives, she did add that she and Vanessa (who joined the show in 2010) did form a close bond.

“What I will say is that, although she was a late addition, Vanessa Williams and me are pretty good friends… We probably had the most in common off-screen because we’re both single mums, we’re both the breadwinners and always have been and we’re pretty much the same age.”

The actress and her 15-year-old daughter called Emerson.

She added: “If anything, I think the separation between the cast is that I just had a different life and a different priority, which was my daughter.” (Teri is mother to a 15-year-old daughter called Emerson from her relationship with actor Jon Tenney.)

Speaking about the end of the show, the 48-year-old actress revealed that it was a shock to many in the crew including herself: “I wasn’t ready for it to be done. I felt like there were still stories to be told. It was a surprise to everybody because we had just renegotiated two-year contracts and we had another year to go, so that was strange. In that sense I think nobody was really expecting it.”
