This is mad.
Surely everyone knows about the storyline from the classic movie Grease? If not, it’s about a quiet “good” girl who meets and falls in love with the cool guy from school over the summer break. There’s a lot of singing and big hairstyles, and that’s just from the guys.
Well, now there’s a fan theory floating about online which is totally mad and flips this storyline on its head. Basically, fans are saying that one of the main characters, Sandy, is actually dead or dying in the movie.
The whole idea stems from their first encounter which Sandy and Danny said happened at the beach. He suggests to his friends that he saved her from drowning. They recall it in one of the first songs in the movie, Summer Nights, where they sing:
“She swam by me she got a cramp
He swam by me got my suit damp
I saved her life she nearly drown
He showed off splashing around.”
People are now saying that he didn’t manage to save her and the movie is all about her dying dream.
A Reddit user points out that there is another part of the movie which proves this theory and it comes in the very last scene where Danny and Sandy’s car flys into the sky. They say that this proves she is dead and she is flying into heaven.
Others have been quick to find flaws with the theory with one person saying, “I thought it was more that the car was fixed up to be so incredibly smooth it’s as if you’re flying above the clouds. So, it’s still from her point of view, but more from an ecstatic teenager perspective, not a dying teenager perspective.”
While another person points out that it was a ‘visual metaphor’.
