Calling all musical fans, the date Wicked is coming to the big screen has been announced

Wicked, the smash hit Broadway musical, is going to be coming to the big screen.

The film adaptation of the 2003 musical will fly into cinemas on December 22, 2021.

According to Variety, Billy Elliot director Stephen Daldry will be directing Wicked, while Marc Platt – who worked on La La Land and Mary Poppins Returns – will be a producer.

Winnie Holzman and three-time Oscar-winning composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz, who adapted the musical from Gregory Maguire’s novel, will be collaborating on the screenplay adaptation.

None of the cast members have been announced yet, but the film is reportedly  set to include two new (and we’d imagine very catchy) songs.

The movie is said to have been originally slated to defy gravity during the 2019 holiday season. However, that is now when the film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats will be arriving (December 20, 2019 – FYI).

Instead, Wicked will be arriving in cinemas just days after James Cameron’s Avatar 3.

The show is a reimagined prequel-of-sorts to The Wizard of Oz.

It follows the untold story of an unlikely but profound friendship between two sorcery students and their extraordinary adventures in Oz, which will ultimately see them fulfil their destinies as Glinda The Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.
