Harry had the scar for pretty much his entire life, after Voldemort tried to kill him when he was just a baby. As a result of Lily Evans Potter's sacrifice and protection, the Killing Curse that He Who Must Not Be Named used on Harry bounced back - getting him instead. It left the then-baby Harry with a scar that appeared to take the shape of a lightning bolt.
