Edible cutlery that tastes like bread now exists but would you give it a try?

Jade Hayden

Intriguing.

If you’ve ever completed a meal and thought ‘yeah I’d definitely be up for some more food, maybe even this cutlery if it was indeed edible’ then you are not alone.

And if you haven’t ever completed a meal and thought that then whatever, good for you and your impressive portion control.

Either way, your answer doesn’t really change the fact that edible cutlery now exists and it tastes a bit like bread.

Sounds good to us.

The Straits Times reports that back in 2005, an Indian man named Narayana Peesapaty ordered some millet bread for lunch.

However, when Narayana eventually got to eat the bread, he discovered that it had become incredibly hard.

He called it his “eureka moment.”

Wanting to reduce the amount of pollution and plastic waste the country was producing, he set amount inventing cutlery that you could eat using jowar, a millet flour, and rice and wheat flour.

Narayana founded his company called Bakeys and began producing spoons in sweet, savoury, and plain flavours. They’re also 100 percent vegan and degradable if chosen not to be eaten.

Incredible.

Due to the costs of setting up the business, however, Narayana’s project has only begun to take off recently.

Each spoon costs four rupees (about 0.1c) and 2.25 million have already been sold since September 2016.

The Bakeys factory now employs 11 people and produces 10,000 spoons a day.

And according to their website, they have plans to branch out into other moulds too.

“We started with spoons and would be adding forks, soup spoons, dessert spoons, yogurt spoons and then we would start making the crockery as well,” they say.

“These would include small bowls, cups, plates and even salad bowls.”

Bakeys are, unfortunately, not able to make edible knives, but you can learn more about all of their products and their plans for world domination here.
