Here’s how you can grab a free coffee over the Bank Holiday weekend

Alan Loughnane

A great idea…

Motorists all over Ireland will be able to avail of a free coffee at participating Applegreen stations as part of a safety campaign to combat the effects of driver fatigue by the Road Safety Authority (RSA) and An Garda Síochána over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Between 2pm and 8pm on today, Friday, 3 August and Monday, 6 August, the RSA and Applegreen will provide free cups of coffee to drivers at participating service stations.

A list of participating Applegreen service stations is available here.

All you have to do is say ‘RSA’  or ‘Driver Reviver’ to the till operator to avail of a free coffee.

In 2017, this promotion saw over 10,000 cups of coffee handed out free to tired drivers over bank holiday weekends. It has run for the last four bank holidays in 2018.

It is estimated that driver fatigue is a contributory factor in as many as 1 in 5 driver deaths in Ireland. Furthermore, tiredness-related collisions are three times more likely to be fatal or result in a serious injury because of the high impact speed and lack of avoiding action.

To combat the effects of driver fatigue, the RSA advises drivers to Stop, Sip, Sleep:

  • Stop: Park in a safe place.
  • Sip: Drink a caffeine drink like a cup of coffee.
  • Sleep. Set the alarm on your mobile phone and take a 15 minute nap. After the nap get some fresh air and stretch your legs for a few minutes, the caffeine should have started to take effect by then.

Be sure to stop in and get your free cuppa if you’re on the road this Bank Holiday weekend.
