Here’s the one benefit of avocados you probably weren’t aware of

Pretty handy.

And no, it’s not that they’re delicious and have the power to anger middle-aged men who can’t deal with the amount of money millennials are supposedly spending on them.

Both of those things are great though, in fairness.

No, the one good thing about avocados that’s taken us by surprise is that they could actually be used to treat medical conditions.

Well, a part of them could be, anyway.

It’s recently been discovered that the seed husk of the avocado (which is the skin around that giant seed in the middle) contains a lot of chemicals that could be used in medications to help treat some very serious illnesses.

According to researchers at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, we shouldn’t be wasting the avocado’s seed husk as much as we have been.

Debasish Bandyopadhyay has said that the component is actually super useful.

“It could very well be that avocado seed husks, which most people consider as the waste of wastes, are actually the gem of gems because the medicinal compounds within them could eventually be used to treat cancer, heart disease and other conditions.”

Bandyopadhyay’s team made their discovery by grinding up over 300 avocado seed husks and processing them into teaspoons of oil and wax.

Their experiment showed that there were 116 components in the oil and 16 in the wax.

Much more than they were expecting, considering none of these are found in the actual seed itself.

The research also showed that the components from the seed husks could be used in industrial products too – meaning they’re helpful for our health, and for manufacturing.
