When it comes to beating the bloat, there’s a long list of foods on the barred list.

However, we were surprised at the results of a recent study which said that some fruits can hamper your best efforts at maintaining a flat stomach.

While it’s always important to get your five-a-day of fruits and vegetables in, you might want to choose your fruit carefully before donning that bodycon dress.

According to the experts, stoned fruits such as plums and peaches are notorious for causing bloating.

Dr. Marilyn Glenville, author of Fat Around The Middle, told Mail Online that this is down to organic compounds called sugar alcohols which can ferment if not digested properly causing bloating and gas.

While these compounds are beneficial to our digestion and overall health, digestion depends on the bacteria in your gut, so it may be best to avoid them right before that important event.

When it comes to veggies, Dr. Glenville advises steering clear of cruciferous veg like broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage.

She explained:

“For some people these vegetables are not digested completely in the small intestines, maybe due to a lack of enzymes.

“It means, that when they reach the large intestines, bacteria in that part of the gut can cause gas and bloating when breaking down those foods.”
