Expert explains why red wine should be stored in the fridge

This goes against everything we know.

Cathy Donohue

NO WAY.

As red wine lovers will know, it’s standard practice to keep it in a press/cupboard and warm it by a radiator/fire to get it to the perfect temperature before drinking it

However, wine connoisseur Jancis Robinson, editor of The Oxford Companion to Wine, dropped a big old truth bomb a while back and we’re only coming across it now.

Apparently, red wine should be stored in the fridge which goes against everything we thought we knew.

Speaking at the Hay Festival in Wales previously, Jancis said that it’s totally fine to store an open bottle of red in the fridge.

When chatting about the ideal temperature to store wine, she said that drinking it chilled is perfectly fine, even better than room temperature.

According to The Daily Mail, Jancis said:

“Put any open bottle in the fridge. Even red wine”.

“Low temperatures slow down chemical reactions including oxidation, which is the enemy of an open bottle”.

If this to be believed, putting your open bottle of wine of red in the fridge means it will last longer, without going bad.

She said the age-old theory of strong wine near heat means it gets too warm and she also said that people often don’t realise that some white wines, for example, a “mature white burgundy” should be served at room temperature, instead of chilled.

Mind sufficiently blown.
