Vegan BBQ buzz: Here’s a super easy recipe for plant-based burger sauce

Jade Hayden

Happy Friday.

Got any plans for the weekend?

Just messing, you better not. Although, if you do, hopefully they’re happening in the safety of your back garden with the grill on, and only your household present.

We have well and truly entered BBQ weather, and you know what that means: burgers. And what accompanies burgers and is incredibly delicious and tasty? Burger sauce.

The staple of any decent grill situation, the sauce is a must when it comes to barbecuing, but what about those of us who have been following a vegan diet for the past while? Is there a delicious sauce that we can make at home to satisfy the craving?

There is, yeah.

The lads over at Lidl have concocted a recipe for a vegan burger sauce that’s just as good as the real thing. No, really. It is.

Vegan burger sauce

You’ll need:

  • 100g Alesto Cashews (€2.19)
  • 4 Freshona cornichons (€1.29)
  • 1 garlic clove (€0.20)

Method:

  • Soak cashew nuts overnight
  • The next day, blend with cornichons and garlic until it’s smooth

Literally, that’s it. No messing about.

The result is a stunning textured totally plant based sauce that does actually tasty exactly like burger sauce.

It’s not as smooth due to the cashews, but listen, it’s delicious, and that’s all you’d want from a vegan variation of a BBQ classic.

Lidl have also got a whole array of vegan meat substitutes Eden plant-based burgers (€2.99) and plant-based sausages (€2.49).

But if vegan isn’t the buzz you’re on at the moment, never fear because Lidl have also created a regular ol’ burger sauce that you can make at home too.

Regular burger sauce

You’ll need:

  • 25g Batts Mayonnaise (€0.79)
  • 1 tbsp Batts Ketchup (€0.69)
  • 1 tbsp McEnnedy American Mustard (€0.89)
  • 1 Freshona pickled gherkin (€0.99), coarsely grated

Method:

  • Mix together. That’s it.

For the meat eaters among us, Lidl’s summer BBQ range also include tasty Inisvale Bord Bia quality approved Irish beef burgers (€2.99), sriracha chilli beef andsSmokey BBQ sizzle steaks (€3.99), and quarter pounder peppered grill steaks (€2.99).

Loads to keep you going, sure.
