This is how you can fully chill a bottle of wine in 15 minutes

Sarah McKenna Barry

That’s our next dinner party sorted, so.

We’ve all been there. Guests are coming over, the house has been cleaned and the dinner’s all prepped.

There’s just one problem.

You forgot to chill your white wine.

You’re kind of left in uncharted territory. Do you risk putting it in the freezer for a rapid cool? What if it’s Prosecco – is that not asking for trouble? Or do you forget about the Sauvignon Blanc altogether and serve up some room temperature red?

Well, as it turns out, you don’t have to do resort to either of these lengths, and that’s all thanks to an Australian woman on Instagram.

In her video, @home.with.leanne outlines how to perfectly chill a bottle of wine in 15 minutes.

She carefully explains the hack in her caption.

Leanne writes: “In a bowl, add water, ice and approximately 2 tablespoons of salt. Add your wine and in 15 mins you have cold wine.”

So how come this trick is so effective? And what is the point of the salt?

Well, according to the website Usual Wines, the salt is necessary because it lowers the freezing point of water, which allows the water to cool without freezing.

Who knew?

In the comments section, other users shared their own approach to quickly chilling a bottle of white wine.

One user wrote: “Wet some paper towel and wrap it around the bottle of wine then place in the freezer. Works way faster.”

A second person wrote: “Another trick is to stick it in the freezer for 15 minutes, then boom! Cold Wine!”

However, Usual Wines have said that the freezer approach comes with a number of limitations. It’s not effective for chilling Chardonnay or sparkling brut, and it’s important to lay the bottle on the side and time it correctly in order to prevent the bottle from exploding.

They advise: “Be sure to set a timer for 30 minutes to an hour to get to the optimal temperature and avoid having the bottle crack or explode.”
