6 ways to help manage everyday anxiety

Alice Murray

Brought to you by LYONS Tea supporting Pieta House.

Anyone who’s has had anxiety knows how scary it can be.

Anxiety is the body and mind’s natural reaction to threat or danger. While it is perfectly normal in high-stress situations such as job interviews and exams, if you find yourself feeling anxious about everyday situations it can become very stressful.

Here are a few tried and tested tips that help relieve everyday anxiety.

Write it down

Keeping a diary or a journal is a great way to help you deal with anxiety. Seeing your thoughts written down on a page can help you place them in context. It’s a great thing to do before bed if you’re struggling to sleep.

Count to ten

When faced with a difficult situation take a step back, take a deep breath, and count to ten. It’s guaranteed to make you feel at least a little bit better. Sometimes you just need a breather, so take a moment to yourself before you face a stressful situation.

Exercise daily

Daily exercise can help boost your mood and relieve pent-up stress from the day. Exercise lowers your body’s stress hormones in the long run. It also helps release endorphins, which are chemicals that improve your mood and act as natural painkillers.

Do your best

That’s all you can do. At work, at home, and in relationships it can be easy to strive for perfection but that is not always possible. Just give everything your best shot and then let it be. You’re only human after all.

Welcome humour

We all need a laugh every now and then. Having a giggle with your friends can actually go a long way to helping you deal with your anxiety. Positive thoughts and a good chuckle once in a while can actually release neuropeptides that help fight stress.

Talk to someone

Talking is key when it comes to anxiety and stress. Always talk to a friend or a family member if you are finding it difficult to cope. There are also lots of great organisations out there who can help you deal with difficult times. If you or someone close to you is struggling with anxiety contact Pieta House online or on 1800 247 247.
