Finally! Expert shares the ‘best’ way to respond to a compliment

Don't get embarrassed. Do this!

Cathy Donohue

The Irish nation is notorious for not knowing what to do when someone pays you a compliment.

We stumble and stutter, often going bright red, making the whole thing more excruciating than it needs to be…sound familiar?

It’s easier to just brush it off and move on to the next topic of conversation, but one expert says there’s a better way to deal with it.

Etiquette expert Jacqueline Whitmore spoke to Glamour and said that the best thing to do is just say thank you.

As Jacqueline say, we often pass compliments off as we don’t want to appear conceited but this can have the opposite effect and end up insulting the compliment giver.

“You can send the message that you don’t respect the opinion of the person who gave you the praise,” says the expert.

The best way to respond is simply:

“Thank you, I appreciate the compliment”.

To be fair, we can see how this would seem awkward but we’re sure it will get easier with practice. Hopefully.
