‘Happy wife, happy life’ is a very real thing, according to one study

Olivia Hayes

We’ve all heard the phrase.

But now it seems like science is backing it up.

Keeping your wife or husband happy, means you will live longer, a study has found. Scientists from Tilburg University in the Netherlands saw that those who have unhappy partners, have more feelings of depression and will be inactive in life in general.

A massive amount of couples took part in the study – 4,400 to be exact – who were both married and living together for an extended amount of time.

They monitored factors such as happiness and health (as well as a few external bits) over an eight year period.

Lead author of the study, Olga Stavrova said:

“Spousal life satisfaction was associated with mortality, regardless of individuals’ socioeconomic and demographic characteristics, or their physical health status.

“The findings underscore the role of individuals’ immediate social environment in their health outcomes. Most importantly, it has the potential to extend our understanding of what makes up individuals’ ‘social environment’ by including the personality and well-being of individuals’ close ones.”

So basically, if you’re unhappy, your partner will be unhappy too. Who you be with, you be like, and all that.

Olga added: “If your partner is depressed and wants to spend the evening eating chips in front of the TV, that’s how your evening will probably end up looking, as well.”
