GIRLOS – If HBO’s Girls Was Set In Dublin

Switch NYC for Raheny...

Rebecca Keane

Girls is one of the greatest shows of all time.

Its presence on HBO always makes us smile and makes the end of Sex and the City just a little bit more bearable.

It’s a fresh perspective on some of the stale clichés that many films and TV shows portray of a young girl living in New York.

The beautiful scenes of a big city, the unique characters, the aimless path of a twentysomething trying to find their way in the world – it makes it all too relatable.

Which is why it’s just so easy to re-imagine Girls set in Dublin. We all know a few people that remind us of Hannah, Marnie, Jessa and all the others so a list has been compiled of what Girls would be like if it were set in Dublin.

Hannah Horvath

Hannah studies TSM (English and History) in Trinity College. However to anyone who asks, she is a literature student or ‘lit’ student. She is a staunch feminist and her cover photo on Facebook says ‘Girls just want to have fun…damental rights’.  She has a habit of telling anyone in a 5-metre radius that she is a vegan, however when people aren’t looking she scoffs an Easi-Single, she has one emergency slice stuffed in her bag at all times. Hannah has a membership card for the IFI and goes to watch foreign films regularly.

She can’t understand a word of any of them but still checks in on Instagram with hashtags like #culture. Hannah can be seen with her good friend Elijah dancing flamboyantly and stealing half-empty drinks at Prhomo of a Thursday night.

Jessa Johnson

Jessa is our airy-fairy dream girl who only ever wears tie-dye t-shirts, ponchos, and dresses from K-Ot-Ik on Liffey Street or alternatively, whatever she can get away with shoplifting from Penneys. Life for Jessa is an eternal picnic, or rather an eternal Electric Picnic. Jessa has dreads in her hair, wears a bindi on a daily basis, and can be seen having lengthy discussions about existentialism in Boojum in the makeup from the night before. Jessa was once a student of NCAD and is somehow largely involved in Urban Artz Soc in DCU, however, she doesn’t care for the idea of leadership in the society so she just sits outside and smokes a lot of weed instead.

Jessa can be seen socialising at your nearest spoken-word event in a squat with a warm can of Devil’s Bit in one hand, and a half-empty pack of Amber Leaf in the other.

Marnie Micheals

Marnie studied Event Management and PR in DBS and now drives a promotional vehicle for a leading radio brand. But first things first, Marnie is wealthy. Extremely wealthy. If you couldn’t already guess by her Longchamp tote bag and Marc Jacobs trench coat, she will literally tell you her dad is ‘very high up’ in KPMG.

One of Marnie’s most annoying habits is reciting ridiculous, borderline impossible sex tips from trashy women’s magazines. Marnie can be seen sipping espresso martinis in Sam’s Bar, 37 Dawson Street or anywhere far, far away from the Northside.

Shoshanna Shapiro

Shoshanna or Shosh, as she is known affectionately to friends is the only girl not from Dublin. She came from a small town in Cavan and secretly, she’s a little bit afraid of everything.

She won’t answer the door of her apartment on Dorset St to any of her friends without a text from them, confirming it’s not a murderer, thug, or even worse a ‘knacker’. Shoshanna is studying Culinary Arts in DIT and is known to produce cakes, breads, fairy buns and more in an effort to feed her friends which she frets about 24/7. Shoshanna can be seen in Everleigh Gardens most nights trying her absolute hardest to talk to the boy she sits beside on the bus to college every day.

Adam Sackler

Adam is a 20/30/40 something (no one is quite sure) who kinda just… hangs around really. He sits at Central Bank for most of his days with a notebook, scribbling furiously all his thoughts on aliens, James Joyce, communism and more.

His Tinder bio reads “don’t swipe right unless you wanna chat!!!!!!” He works at Eddie Rockets but doesn’t tell anyone as he wants everyone to think he lives off the fat of the land.

Elijah Krantz

giphy (8)

Elijah is one of the notorious ‘Power Gays’ in Dublin. He is the chairperson for Q Soc in Trinity College and is rarely seen dressed in anything other than all black garb from Cos. He works in Lush and is (truth be told) a bit of a social climber. He has 2,000 followers on Twitter and his bio is one of many largely insulting quotes by Kate Moss.

If Elijah were to bring one item to a desert island, it would be his trademark septum ring that he got in Nine Crows. He can be seen out and about in Church in Hangar asking anyone and everyone in the smoking area for drugs.
