It’s safe to say Electric Picnic got off to a great start today.
Thousands of people descended onto Stradbally Estate for the first day of Electric Picnic. 55,000 festivalgoers are expected over the course of the weekend, with the majority arriving today.
Everyone had dressed and packed for a hurricane and luckily it was a no-show. The sun was shining for most of the day with the odd shower once or twice, which didn’t seem to impact on people’s enjoyment.
There were even some eager beavers in the swimming lake first thing today. The weather played a massive part with others sure to follow throughout the weekend if it stays dry. This is the first year that people will be able to swim with the lake being opened to festivalgoers.
Here’s how we got on exploring the site:

One of the highlights of the day was when 2FM DJ Jenny Greene joined up with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra to play some classic ’90s tunes in Rankin’s Wood. The whole tent was packed out and they nearly blew the roof off it.

The party seemed to kick off almost instantly at the likes of Casa Bacardi and Heineken Sound Stage with packed out crowds filling those sections from early on.

As expected, the main stage attracted huge crowds at various times of the day with the likes of ABC, Ryan Sheridan and Nas taking to the stage and of course The Chemical Brothers will play to the masses later on.

And what would Electric Picnic be without the crowd going wild for Maniac 2000.

Some people put in a lot of effort when it came to costumes and outfits with these two brothers from Walkinstown, Dublin, going in their Cool Runnings gear, bobsled and all.

The party is only just getting started in Stradbally with the likes of the rave in the wood, Anachronica, not kicking off until midnight.
