This jewellery has a panic button on it in case you don’t feel safe walking home

This is a pretty great idea.

We all feel it from time to time. Whether you’re walking home from work in the dark, or you’re just down in your mates house, sometimes we just get this eerie feeling – and we don’t feel safe.

There might be somebody walking a little too close behind us, or a gang of teenagers up ahead that are taking over the path. We don’t feel safe – which is wrong, but it’s the world we live in unfortunately.

Well, a jewellery and watch brand, Leaf Wearables, has created a collection of pieces that have panic buttons built into them – so in the case that you can’t reach your phone or don’t have time to – you can just press the button and a list of emergency contacts will be alerted.

The wearable panic buttons came about after Anu and Naveen Jain founded The Women’s Safety XPRIZE, where they were giving a €1 million prize to whoever came up with a device that “autonomously and inconspicuously trigger an emergency alert while transmitting information to a network of community responders, all within 90 seconds.” It also had to cost less than $40 (€35).

Leaf Wearables won the prize with the Safer Pendant. The device has Bluetooth installed into it and links up with your phone wirelessly. If you are in danger, all you have to do is press the button on the pendant twice and your emergency contacts will be alerted to your location.

It will also automatically begin to record audio, should you need it at a later date.

“These devices were tested in many conditions by the judges to ensure that they will work in real-life cases where women face dangers today. They were tested in no-connectivity areas, on public transit, in basements of buildings, among other environments,” Anu Jain told TechCrunch.

“Having the capability to record audio after sending the alert was one of the main differentiators for Leaf Wearables. Their chip design and software was also easy to be integrated into other accessories.”

We are definitely getting on board with this.
