Some legend played ‘Maniac 2000’ on the Luas and passengers went wild

Take this Luas to the maximum!

This story has come real far.

Sixteen years later now here we are.

Oh, Marc McCabe, we forgive you for being a one hit wonder when the one hit you produce is such a banger.

Usually, playing music at full blast on the Luas invites disapproving stares. Not this time. Some enterprising young Dub decided to blare ‘Maniac 2000’ on the Luas and put it up on Instagram.

User _philthebarber_ uploaded the video yesterday evening, and so far the video has almost 450 views. He captioned it: “Maniac 2000 blasting and the craic was 90 on the Luas home night.”

Hard to believe it has been 16 years since the track reached No 1 in the Irish Singles Chart. Where does the time go? The single, not only managed to stay at number one for ten consecutive weeks, it’s actually the fifth best-selling single in the history of the chart. Yup.

The sheer popularity of the song with so many people across our emerald isle begs the question: how come Mark McCabe never represented Ireland in the Eurovision? Is it because he would’ve killed it? (In the good sense, of course)

If Eurovision conspiracists are to be believed, maybe McCabe’s hit would’ve done too well and earned us the elusive 12 points across the board, finally bringing the legendary song contest back to its rightful home. Damn you Eurovision saboteurs!

For the day that’s in it, we’ve decided to revisit the lyrics of this one hit wonder and we’ve uncovered a deep hidden meaning that we never saw before.

For example, who knew that Mark McCabe was such an undercover existentialist?

“Life it has no meaning, are you ready now move to the madness”: lyrics that would make John-Paul Sartre blush.

Red faced-ness aside, the passengers on this evening Luas journey home look like they are having the time of their lives! We just wish that we could’ve been there!
