Meet Pigcasso, the art sensation who was rescued as a little piglet

Louise Carroll

Now you may be a big fan already (she has a huge 22.2k followers on Instagram) but just in case not…

There’s so much more to animals than many think. They’re smart, emotional and some, it seems, enjoy picking up a paint brush too.

Pigcasso, as she is so aptly named, was rescued from an abattoir as a piglet by her human and Farm Sanctuary SA founder, Joanne Lefson.

Usually, she would chew just about everything to pieces but in the sanctuary’s newly refurbished barn lay a few paint brushes on the ground and voilà, it appeared, with a canvas and some paint, this girl had talent – talent entirely worth sharing with the world.

Now, she’s not banging out self portraits within the hour, but her abstract work (category is important here) does have a place in the art world and an appeal with American, Dutch and South African buyers. Many are even willing to spend around $3,500 for a painting, signed beautifully by the tip of her nose. Even better – all the money she earns helps fund animal causes. (G’wan Pigcasso!)

Her paintings have received such praise and admiration, she has even collaborated with Swiss watch maker Swatch who chose Pigcasso as their artist for the 2019 annual collector’s series, and of course, to celebrate the Chinese year of the pig.

Amazingly, it has been one of Swatch’s best selling limited edition pieces ever, and the watch has been selling for up to $1,000 on eBay.

Remember if you’re heading to South Africa on holidays anytime soon, visitors are welcome at the Farm Sanctuary SA where you can check out Pigcasso’s art gallery and no doubt you’ll meet plenty of other beautiful rescues too.

Fair play to Pigcasso and all the terrific humans involved for doing what they can to make a piggies dreams come true and help animal-kind.

To Pigcasso!
