It’s easy to imagine that the Making A Murderer trial is happening in real time as you’re watching the Netflix series, but the reality is that Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey were arrested 11 and 10 years ago respectively.
The massive series has people becoming very invested in the case, with a petition even put to the White House calling for justice for Avery and his nephew Dassey.
At the time of his arrest, Dassey was only 16 but has spent most of the last decade in prison. His cousin, Carla Chase tweeted a picture of him recently and the 26-year-old looks decidedly different.

Chase has also revealed that Dassey has had to move to another location for his own safety.
