As the long – loooooong – Irish winter draws in, there are few greater comforts than throwing on your comfy clothes, finding a warm spot at home, and curling up with a book.
But can you imagine having your own little getaway in the woods just for the purposes of reading in peace and quiet?
This is the Hemmelig Rom, which translates from Norwegian as “Secret Room”, located in the Catskill Mountains, in upstate New York.
It has been built as a collaboration between Studio Padron and artist Jason Koxvold.
Just read its description from the project’s website:
“..the monolithic black form recedes into the surrounding forest during certain seasons and lighting conditions. [Inside is] a warm, silent interior library, constructed from 12,000lbs of red oak milled on the property. The massive volume of wood becomes a heatsink, storing energy from the single cast-iron stove to allow the temperature to self-regulate. Guests are invited to leave a private message in one of the 2,500 books on the shelves.”
Yes, that’s a little bed – and all the walls make for stacked bookshelves.
Can you imagine the blissful solitude?
Can. You. Imagine?
Here are some more shots of the interior – all images are courtesy of Jason Koxvold.
The Hemmelig Rom features in the book, The Hinterland: Cabins, Love Shacks, And Other Hide-Outs, published by Gestalten.
