A bill has been passed banning vain pet owners from tattooing their cats and dogs.

The issue was raised following news that a Brooklyn tattoo shop owner has inked his puppy while she underwent surgery, and videos appeared on YouTube of a woman selling kittens with jewellery piercings.

Tattoo master “Mistah Metro” revealed his pooch Zion’s new skin art with an image uploaded to his Instagram account. Zion was unconscious from spleen surgery when inked. The snap was captioned:

“My dog is cooler than yours!”

State Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal called the practice a “misguided extension” of how skin-art enthusiasts are expressing themselves, saying:

“To subject the animals to unnecessary painful procedures to satisfy the owners’ fancy is . . . reprehensible.”

The Assembly has already passed the bill, and local government is expected to sign it into law over the coming days.
