Exclusive: First look at the video for LYRA’s inspirational new song

Leslie Ann Horgan

LYRA is our newest crush.

The woman has incredible vocals, killer style and a cracking sense of humour – and she’s one of our own to boot.

The Cork singer is a rising star of Irish music, who sold out headline shows in London and Dublin, as well as supporting the likes of Jess Glynne and Dermot Kennedy. Her stirring single, Falling, was featured on Love Island earlier this year. And she followed that with a performance of her signature blend of dark and moody electronic pop at Electric Picnic, where the Her team caught up with her backstage.

Now, you can take an exclusive first look at the video for LYRA’s new single, Mother.

The emotional performance sees LYRA, accompanied simply by a piano, show off her impressive range and a vocal talent that sits somewhere between Florence Welch and Kate Bush. Mother is, by turns, haunting and uplifting – we cannot get it out of our heads.

LYRA says that the powerful song is about who own mum, who has been an invaluable support for the young singer throughout her life. She said:

“The song is about growing up and wrestling with who I was – something I think we all go through at one point or another in this crazy thing called life! Growing up I was teased about my appearance quite a bit and then, as I began to sing, also my voice. It definitely got me down – especially about the singing because I felt like I’d found my passion but was ashamed of doing it.

“My mum always told me to rise above it all, accept myself as I was, to be proud of that and enjoy life. That advice often felt hard to follow but she never stopped reminding me.”

LYRA hopes that this song will offer that same strength an encouragement on to everyone who listens to it.

“It’s not always easy – I still have insecurities and worry about all sorts of things – who doesn’t –  but this song’s a reminder to pick your ass up, give it a big old shake to get the dust off and go hell for leather with anything and everything you want to do – and always remember to encourage others to do the exact same!”

Mother is out now, and LYRA will be playing a headline show at The Academy in Dublin in March 2020, and tickets are on sale now.
