Exclusive: Lesley Joseph Chats With Her.ie About Upcoming Bord Gais Energy Theatre Show

Laura Holland

We caught up with Lesley Joseph to chat about Annie, which comes to the Bord Gais Energy Theatre from April 12th-16th.

Lesley is best known for playing Dorien Green, the neighbour from hell, in the sitcom Birds of a Feather, alongside Pauline Quirke and Linda Robson.

She comes to Dublin to play the role of Miss Hannigan in the musical Annie.

While we’re all probably familiar with the story of Annie, Lesley says that the show is quite different to how we would all remember it.

She said, “The story has been entirely rethought, and there’s none of the same sort of sets. It’s on a jig zaw puzzle. It’s much more nitty-gritty. It’s much more set in 1930’s depression and it’s not as wimsical as it has been in the past.

“There is much more choregraphy and it’s much more true to the sort of period of 1933. It’s much harder hitting and it’s really wonderful.”

Lesley has been playing the role since last June while it has been on the road. They’ve just finished a successful run in Derry where Lesley was so pleased to have received seven standing ovations.

She says the show really is for all ages and that people will think they know what to expect but then they get surprised by the style of show because it’s much grittier than the normal productions.
