Festival food: The good, the bad and the ugly exposed

Niamh Maher

Festival season is our FAVOURITE time of the year.

The sun is (sometimes) shining, the best bands in the world are playing Irish venues, and we are completely famished! Seriously… what is it about festivals that make us want to eat everything in sight?

We know festivals are an expensive past-time at the best of times, with ticket entry and taking days off work, we 100% lose money at festivals, but we’re also happier than pigs in s**t… so we’ll take it.

The prices at vendors can sometimes be slightly on the obscene side, so if you’re planning to take the festival camping scene by storm this season… we have the perfect tips to keep your tummy in check.

THE GOOD:

  • Beans – We know it’s clichè but guess what, they’re delicious AND nutritious (we don’t work for a bean company), we recommend getting the kind with the ring pull.
  • Cereal bars – Easy, good for you (ish) and no preparation needed. Fantastic.
  • Bananas – Seriously bring heaps of these. They’ll be good if you need a snack, and will keep you running for the meat vendor if you’re feeling peckish.

THE BAD:

  • Anything meat related – Just think… food poisoning and portaloos. Enough said.
  • Anything organic or gourment – This actually translates to a downpayment on your mortgage.
  • Pringles – Slippery slope my friends, it starts with one tube… then once you pop you seriously can’t stop.

THE UGLY:

    • Fish – Just don’t eat fish at a festival… promise us.
