These songs will put in the festive mood!

The Most Played songs at Christmas time last year have been announced with, unsurprisingly, The Pogues and Kirstie MacColl’s song The Fairytale of New York landing top spot.

The song had dropped to number two in 2012 having been beaten off poll position by The Power of Love by Gabrielle Aplin – a song which had featured in a John Lewis ad – but regained its status as the most-played Christmas song last year. In at number two came Lily Allen’s Somewhere Only We Know which became a massive hit after it also featured on the John Lewis Christmas ad last year.

Third place went to Mariah Carey and All I Want for Christmas is You.

The figures were released by royalties group PPL who compiled the list going on radio play and public performances. Other festive tunes to get a mention included Last Christmas by Wham! Which scooped fourth place while Slade’s Merry Xmas Everybody came in in fifth place.

“Together, the Top 10 got more than a full year of UK airplay in 2013, meaning that it really could be Christmas every day – if you wished it to be,” said senior music intelligence analyst at PPL, Mike Dalby.

The remainder of the Top 10 included, I Wish it Could Be Christmas Everyday (Wizard), Do They Know it’s Christmas? (Band Aid), Driving Home for Christmas (Chris Rea), One More Sleep (Leona Lewis) and Merry Christmas Everyone (Shakin’ Stevens).
