John McAreavey has held a press conference in Mauritius.

It’s been six years since 27-year-old Michaela was found strangled in her hotel room just two weeks after her wedding in January 2011.

John McAreavey, who re-married last year, flew into Mauritius yesterday and held meetings with the Mauritian police, prosecutors, and the Prime Minister.

Speaking earlier this morning in the Mauritian capital of Port Louis, John made an emotional plea offering a reward of 2m Mauritian rupees (€50,000) for fresh information;

“We cannot achieve justice on our own, that is quite clear, we are dependent… on the Mauritian authorities, Mauritian media and the wider general Mauritian public.” McAreavey said.

“We need the support and we need the courage of the Mauritian people to come forward with whatever information that may be relevant to aid us in our quest. That I cannot reiterate strongly enough. This, our visit in April 2017, is the beginning of a new process, we hope by working with the authorities and Mauritian people we can bring justice for Michaela.”

“We have the energy, resources and determination to be here as many times and for as long as it takes…. we will not relent until the people responsible for Michaela’s murder are served justice,”

McAreavey travelled to Mauritius with his sister, Claire, and Mark Harte, Michaela’s eldest brother, who also spoke at the news conference.

“Please be brave, please come forward with the truth,” Mark Harte said. “No matter how small or irrelevant you think it is.

“We can achieve justice for the people who so brutally and callously took her life.”

Two hotel workers were found not guilty of Michaela’s murder in 2012.
