How much JC science do you REALLY remember?

No doubt about it – the Junior Cert was stressful. There was loads to learn, it cut into summertime, and was essentially completely unnecessary.

It made us want to forget everything about it. Mostly that wasn’t possible because we still had the dreaded Leaving Cert (a decidedly worse experience) ahead of us, but some Junior Cert subjects we gave up and never looked at again.

For the Leaving, science was split into biology, chemistry, and physics. Even people who took science probably wouldn’t learn all three. So many of us had forgotten most or all of it by the time college rolled around.

Yet, every day we interact with things that exist and work because of science. Do you ever wonder how your fridge works? Why you can control your iPhone just by touching the screen? Why does food go off and how come we can still eat some food after it moulds?

Science Week 2018 will be taking place around Ireland from 11-18 November. For that week, Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) are encouraging people to ask those questions that they’ve always wondered. Why and how do things work? It’s a fascinating world that we live in and we should learn as much as we can about it.

If you have ever wondered anything about the world around you, post your question on social media with the hashtag #StopAndAsk. By the end of the day you’ll be that bit more in the know.

There are also loads of events happening around the country over the week. Learn all about the science of gin, or how your smart phone works. It might be simpler than you thought, or it might blow your mind. You’ll never know if you don’t ask.

For now though, let’s see how much you do know. How much of that dreaded Junior Cert exam would you be able to get through today? Maybe you’ll surprise yourself.
