Katelyn Ohashi is a gymnast and her UNREAL routine is breaking the internet

Amy Nolan

Katelyn Ohashi achieved a perfect 10.0 score.

An exceptional gymnast has gone viral with her sensational routine since performing it on Saturday night.

The energy, skill and vibrancy of 21-year-old Katelyn Ohashi’s floor routine was nothing short of perfection and indeed was labelled more deserving than a score of ten as the UCLA Gymnastics official Twitter account duly noted.

Cheers of elation were heard from Katelyn’s fellow teammates, the crowd and the judges as she backflipped reaching insane heights and slipped into perfect splits with an ease that made it look like anyone could.

In just under a minute and a half, Katelyn’s routine to an upbeat medley of songs that included Proud Mary, I Want You Back and The Way You Make Me Feel had many heralding it as one of the best they had ever seen.

Although she made it look easy, as any exceptional person in their field does, Katelyn has had a tough road to success.

The Washington Post reports that a few years ago Katelyn nearly quit the sport because she was suffering from serious burnout. Last Saturday showed a person who is still very much in love with her sport however and her first words after the performance, “I’m back”, seem all the more meaningful in light of her previous hardships.

Katelyn’s beaming smile exuded a kind of electric energy and her performance at the Collegiate Challenge, helped UCLA Bruins place first.

While this isn’t the first time Katelyn has gone viral, she’s definitely still a humble girl in spite of her astounding success.

With a love of the sport once again at the heart of thigs, Katelyn says:

“It’s not the outcome. It’s not me standing on the podium with medals. It’s me being able to walk out with a smile on my face and truly being happy with myself.”

20×20 is an ambitious two-year long initiative to better promote and champion women in sport.

With the tagline of “if she can’t see it, she can’t be it,” the 20×20 movement has three targets to reach by 2020:

  • 20 percent more media coverage of women in sport
  • 20 percent more female participation
  • 20 percent more attendance at women’s competitions and events

And at Maximum Media, we’re proud that Her and SportsJOE is backing the 20X20 movement as official digital media partners.
