Unreal news.

We have some fantastic news this afternoon folks.

RTE has committed to showing every game of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup – a first for Irish television.

For the last World Cup in 2015, Irish viewers watched the matches on British TV channels.

However, that switch will no longer be required.

Coverage of the tournament will begin on June 7th, and will continue for exactly one month.

23 matches will be broadcast on RTE2 and the RTE Player.

RTE’s Head of Sport said:

“RTE are delighted that alongside TG4 we can, for the first time ever, bring the FIFA Women’s World Cup in its entirety free-to-air to Irish viewers.”

“It is particularly fitting to be making this announcement exactly six months on from the launch of the 20×20 initiative to create a cultural shift in our perception of girls and women in sport.”

TG4 will also be showing matches, saying:

“TG4 has been a proactive supporter of Women’s Sport for many years. This new collaboration is another step in the right direction and ties in well with the very important 20×20 campaign.”

“It is also a great example of how public service media outlets can collaborate to bring the best of television content, free to air, to loyal audiences.”

20×20 is an ambitious two-year long initiative to better promote and champion women in sport.

With the tagline of “if she can’t see it, she can’t be it,” the 20×20 movement has three targets to reach by 2020:

  • 20 percent more media coverage of women in sport
  • 20 percent more female participation
  • 20 percent more attendance at women’s competitions and events

And at Maximum Media, we’re proud that Her and SportsJOE is backing the 20X20 movement as official digital media partners.
