Simona Halep has won her first Wimbledon title.

The 27-year-old former world number one won 6-2 6-2 against Serena Williams in front of a packed-out Centre Court this afternoon [July 13].

It is her second Grand Slam title after her success at the French Open in 2018. She is also now the first Romanian to win a singles title at the All England Club.

Halep told Sky News after the match that she had “never” played a better game, adding:

“I came on court and gave my best.

“It’s something very special and I will never forget this day. It was my mum’s dream that I would play the final of Wimbledon – thanks to my parents.”

And Williams praised Halep, saying that the 27-year-old had “literally played out of her mind.”

She continued:

“It was a little bit ‘deer in the headlights’ for me. Whenever someone plays like that you just have to take your hat off and nod your head.”

Today’s match was attended by a number of famous faces, including Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle.
