The insanely romantic country house hotel perfect for a winter weekend away

Trine Jensen-Burke

Summer is great, let’s all agree.

But guys – winter. Winter is just so beautiful and amazing, no?

In fact, blame it on my Scandi roots, but I will argue that winter travel is so totally romantic it almost beats your summer trip to the beach. Just think about it: A gorgeous, luxurious country hotel, complete with a lobby with a huge, roaring fireplace, deep, comfy seating – and mulled wine (or whatever else you are drinking) on tap.

Tell me it doesn’t sound like perfection: A stroll around the frosty gardens or grounds, then coming inside to curl up in front of the fire, before heading for an early dinner, maybe a little spa treatment, a nightcap – and then you are off to your (huge, luxuriously decked-out) bed.

Heaven. I know.

And if a little winter-break to a romantic hotel sounds like something you’d like to indulge in this year – I have the perfect, perfect place for you.

The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa in Bath, England.

This, my friends, is country hotel perfection. And then some. You’ll notice it already when you pull up outside the sweeping Georgian facade of buttery Bath stone before you even set foot inside the breathtakingly beautiful lobby.

The hotel features 45 guest rooms, including eight Deluxe Suites and three Master Suites, and regardless of which room your stay in, trust me when I say you will not be disappointed.

If a visit to the spa is your thing when you are at a nice hotel (and really – you don’t want to miss this one), the Spa & Bath House is a must-see. Not just for the gorgeous treatments (I had the most amazing hot stone massage when I visited), but the 12-metre heated Relaxation Pool is truly worth a dip. Oh – and to complete your romantic break, why not book yourself in for a couple’s massage?

Bath is obviously a very romantic and amazing city, chock-a-block with fabulous restaurants and bars, so you won’t be stuck for somewhere to eat on your visit. But if you don’t fancy leaving the hotel while you are there – and look, I don’t blame you – you have plenty of choice with the Montagu Bar & Champagne Lounge and the Michelin-star awarded Dower House Restaurant.

Two more gorgeous country hotels

If you want something a little more remote and romantic for your winter break away, I have a feeling you are going to love both of these:

The Devonshire Arms Hotel & Spa

The Devonshire Arms Hotel and Spa is a stunning country-side luxury hotel set in a 17th-century country inn – steeped in history. And a break here will see you leave feeling more healthy and wholesome than you have felt in a long time.

The rooms are gorgeous, the food is fantastic, and the spa is brilliant – and the country setting is so, so perfect for a romantic winter break.

Dormy House

The English countryside will enchant you with its winter beauty, and Dormy House might just be Cotswolds chic at its best. Think intimate, romantic bedrooms, cozy armchairs in front of roaring fires, outdoor hot tubs, a spa you want to spend hours in and strolls around picture-perfect villages and sweeping country lanes.
