The Heritage Hotel: Where you’ll find old-world opulence and a pretty fabulous spa

Heritage Hotel

Sometimes you just need a break.

Life is busy, end of. We all have stuff going on and while everyone’s daily stresses and strains are different, they exist regardless and sometimes, you have to take the time to look after yourself. Easier said than done, we know.

However, if you can make time and want to spend your hard-earned money on a hotel break, then Ireland has a number of gorgeous properties ready and waiting. Grand hotels, cosy Airbnbs and country manors – there really is something for everyone.

Of course, we all love a treat, the opportunity to truly spoil oneself and with that in mind, I recently stayed at The Heritage Hotel located just outside Portarlington, Laois.

The décor

Think old-world luxury. Opulence at every turn, rich carpets, heavy brocade curtains and dark mahogany furniture. Lamps and vases that you’d be in serious trouble over if you broke one at home…we’ve all been there.

The vibe

You’re here to completely chill out, it’s very much a spot for couples. There were more twosomes than groups dining, making for a relaxed atmosphere where it was obvious that guests were there to zone out and take some time out together. In fact, if you’re looking for something to gift your parents this Christmas, you could do a lot worse than a voucher for The Heritage, they would be off to live their best lives.

The Instagram spot

The stunning staircase, without a doubt. It’s the first thing you notice when you enter the lobby and the black and gold colour combination wouldn’t be out of place in a castle. The staircase has featured on Instagram previously, no surprises there, and you’ll be tempted to get a photo, particularly if you’re feeling your outfit.

The room

The suite life is the good life. Bonus point for the balcony overlooking the lush green golf course and the cosy couch positioned in front of the TV, ideal if you want to sit in and chill. The bed was a delight too, coming from someone who finds it next to impossible to sleep in a hotel room.

The bathroom

Two bathrooms in fact. One with a toilet and sink and the other, a room in itself. Note, stunning double sinks and a beautiful bath. Living in an apartment which is sadly lacking a bath, having one in a hotel is a treat I always take advantage of. However, the shower was a slight negative as it was quite weak and with thick hair like mine, washing it took longer than usual.

The products

ESPA toiletries, the jasmine and bergamot combination which pretty much feels like a personal spa in your bathroom, exactly what you want while on a mini holiday.

The spa

I visited late in the evening and didn’t get to check out all of the facilities but The Heritage is renowned for its spa and leisure centre. You’ll want to soak up all that luxury and there’s no place better to do so than the spa. It’s located in a separate building just beside the hotel and the relaxation room was so good, I had to peel myself from the day bed in order to get ready for dinner. It was 50/50 between the mushroom ravioli I’d read about and another snooze, I’m glad to say the ravioli won.

The robe

Fluffy, cosy and something I’d enjoy wearing all day. In fact, I need to do just that next time I organise a spa break.

The food

Blakes Restaurant has recently been renovated and the new space is just beautiful, note those statement light fittings and blush pink alcoves. My sourdough and garlic chilli prawn starter was perfection and as you can tell, I very much enjoyed the aforementioned ravioli. My companion was delighted with the steak and also noted his starter of crab and apple tian as one to remember. However, my brownie was served cold which I was a little disappointed with having expected a deliciously gooey chocolate situation.

The win

The perfect spot to go for a one-night break away with your significant other or close gal pal. Seven, the cosy bar, is the ideal place to sit and chat over pre/post-dinner drinks. It would also be just perfect for some me-time and something about having a hotel room all to yourself in the run-up to Christmas is the vibe I need right now *books solo hotel stay*

The fail

As mentioned, the shower was a little too feeble for my liking but I have to stress the fact that my hair is exceptionally thick.

The locale

I didn’t get to sample the delights of Portarlington this time around, we were only at The Heritage for one night and I wanted to take the time to experience the hotel properly. However, the hotel is located just outside the town which would work if you wanted to head in for a jaunt.

Her was invited to stay at The Heritage for a one night stay in exchange for a fair and honest review. The Perfect Pick Me Up Package (1 Night B&B, Afternoon Tea, 30 Minute Treatment, Thermal Suite Access) is priced at €270 pp. For more information, you can check out the website here.
