Top 6 things to get up to for your Northern Ireland trip

Pack those bags, it’s time for a weekend getaway.

Sometimes (always) you just need a break. A little time away from home, an escape to somewhere where you can forget about work deadlines and life stresses.

Luckily Ireland is FILLED with wonderful locations and fun activities to get up to all year round. So all you need to do is grab a bag and hop in the car or on a train and you’ll have yourself a perfect mini break.

One of our favourite places to visit for a short getaway is Northern Ireland. There are so many different things to experience in every county. If you’re feeling the itch to flee the home for a weekend, we definitely suggest you head up north.

If you’re stuck for what to do while you’re there, here are our top six things to get up to in the North.

1. Walk the Gobbins Cliff Path

You’d be hard pushed to find a better walk than this one anywhere in the world, let alone in Ireland. This path takes you along the Gobbins cliff face, over bridges, inside tunnels (you get to don some very fashionable hard hats), and even out onto a lone sea stack.

The scenery around Gobbins cliff is just spectacular and there isn’t a better way to experience it than walking this path yourself. The path was originally opened in 1902 and remains as captivating now as it was then.

2. Fill up at Yugo

This little gem in Belfast has mouth-watering Asian-style food with Belfast-style character. The Asian fusion restaurant serves beautiful dishes that will make anyone drool. They have plenty of veggie and vegan options so there’s something for everyone.

The staff are so friendly, know all about the food they’re serving, and always seem set on helping you to have a great time. It’s the perfect place if you’re looking for a little somewhere special to try out on your trip.

3. Grab some waves at Portrush

Irish waves are famous the world over. Surfers from Hawaii, California, and Australia alike all flock to our chilly coasts to experience the Irish swell. Sure it’d be rude not to give it a go ourselves.

Portrush beach is located in County Antrim right at the tip top of Ireland. It’s a good place to catch a few waves, especially if you’re a beginner. There’s a surf school beside the beach, so don’t worry about not having your own gear – they’ll sort you out.

4. Enjoy some music at The Empire

If you’re looking for a night out but don’t feel like hitting a club, look no further than The Empire. It’s the best spot to head to if you’re a music fan. They have a show on most nights, mostly music but sometimes comedy (Tuesday is their comedy night if you feel like a few good laughs).

Check out what they have on whenever you’re heading up

5. Sip some cocktails at Rita’s cocktail bar

If you’re looking for somewhere to let off a little steam, sip a few cocktails, let your hair down, Rita’s is the place to go. The beer and cocktail menu is pretty extensive so you’ll definitely find something to your liking here. Rita’s doesn’t put up with rowdy groups, so don’t worry about the place being taken over by a group of boisterous college students. It’s one of the most lavish cocktail joints around and you will feel fancy af hitting it up.

6. Moonlight kayaking

This. Is. Stunning.

For £25 pounds you can take a guided paddle on the River Foyle from sunset to full moon. This adventure is an utterly magical experience. The trip lasts about three hours and is far enough away from any city lights that you have a spectacular view of the stars. Honestly, you NEED to give this a go.

That by no means completes the list of things to do in Northern Ireland, it’s just our very top favourite activities. Not a chance you’ll be disappointed if you put even one of these on your list. So quick, get yourselves up there!
